Community English Class (weekly)
The Community English Class is a free conversational English class, and it is open to all non-native English speakers. We integrate activities focusing on all four skills—reading, writing, speaking and listening—though we provide special emphasis on conversation skills through ample opportunities to connect with other attendees of the class and the teachers. Some class activities combine all proficiency levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced); we also divide up into smaller classes based on proficiency level, and we use a textbook for these smaller proficiency-specific classes. All attendees are assessed by the teachers through an assessment tool; attendees are then placed into the appropriate class for their level.
The Community English Class is free (except for the cost of the textbook), and it meets on Wednesdays from 9:30 – 11:30 am at BG Alliance Church (1161 E. Napoleon Road) from September 21, 2011- May 2, 2012. You may come at any time and participate as often as you wish. Free childcare is also provided. Contact Julie at jgeorge@globalconnectionsbg.org for more information.
TOEFL – Global Connections provides a free TOEFL-iBT Prep Class every summer for those who are planning to take the TOEFL in the near future. Contact Julie if you are interested in participating.
Shopping Trips to International Markets in Toledo (monthly)
Every month, Global Connections volunteers take internationals up to Toledo for them to shop at an Asian market, a Middle Eastern market, and an Indian market. Dates for the shopping trips are always listed in the monthly e-newsletter In Touch with Global Connections. You must reserve your spot as soon as possible since space is limited. Contact Julie at jgeorge@globalconnectionsbg.org to begin receiving In Touch with Global Connections or to find out dates for upcoming shopping trips.
Every week there isn’t a International Shopping Trip, there will be a shopping trip around the area of Bowling Green. Local stores will include Wal-Mart, Meijer, and others. Volunteers from our partners and other international volunteers will drive interested participants to their destinations. Dates will be listed on the website and in the In Touch newsletter. Space is limited so email Julie if interested.
From September – May each year, we are happy to give away furniture that community members have donated. If you have a need of furniture or a furniture item, please contact Beth at bmanahan@globalconnectionsbg.org.
We are happy to help out with transportation requests as we have GC Volunteers available to help. Please note the guidelines below:
- We can only accommodate transportation requests to Toledo Express Airport, Toledo Amtrak Station, Toledo Greyhound Bus Station, Toledo MegaBus Station & Detroit Metro Airport.
- Since GC Volunteers are freely giving their time and their gas, we are now suggesting that you provide the Volunteer who is dropping you off or picking you up with a $15 donation to/from a Toledo transportation center or a $30 donation to/from Detroit Metro Airport.
- A travel release form must be filled out.
- We now require that you inform us two weeks in advance of your travel plans.
- Please keep in mind that GC Volunteers are not always available at the last minute;thus, it is always best to make some alternative plans.
If you have a transportation request, please contact Julie.
